The purpose of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia, provide that buildings and structures should be permitted to be constructed at the least possible cost consistent with recognized standards of health, safety, energy conservation and water conversation, including provisions necessary to prevent overcrowding, rodent or insect infestation, and garbage accumulation; and barrier-free provisions for the physically handicapped and aged.

The Accomack County Building and Zoning Office enforces the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code throughout the County of Accomack and in all Incorporated Towns with the exception of the Town of Chincoteague. The Town of Chincoteague maintains its own Building and Zoning Office The Building Official and Zoning Administrator for the Town of Chincoteague is Mark Bowden.
