The County of Accomack Code Section 10-96 states that it is unlawful for any person to own a dog four months or older unless such dog is licensed.

To purchase a tag, the dog owner must present a valid rabies vaccination certificate for the dog. Dogs found in the County without a valid tag are taken by Animal Control to a shelter where they remain until the owner pays for the vaccination and obtains the proper tag.

Dog tags expire on December 31st of each year. No renewal notice will be sent to owners. An advertisement reminding residents of the requirement to purchase a dog tag will be run in a newspaper of general circulation in the County during the month of January.

Dog tags may be purchased by mail, in the County Treasurer’s Office, or at one of rabies clinics conducted by the Accomack County Health Department.

To purchase by mail, complete a dog license application and return it along with a copy of the rabies certification and payment. Please do not send your pet's examination invoices, Rabies Certificate only.

If the dog's rabies vaccination expires before the new license year begins, a copy of a current vaccination certificate must be submitted with the renewal form.

Note that we do not keep Rabies Certificates on file in the Treasurer's Office.

Fees

As per County of Accomack Code Section 10-96, dog license fees are as follows:

One year spayed or neutered: $5.00
One year non-spayed or non-neutered: $10.00
Duplicate license: $1
Kennel license (up to and including 20 dogs): $25.00
Kennel license (Over 20 dogs): $40.00
Rescue/Service dog licenses are free.
