Hours of Operation

The North Landfill and South Transfer Station are open 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The landfills are closed on Sundays, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Authorized Use

In general, only solid waste generated and originated within the county is accepted at the landfills. On a case by case basis, the Accomack County Board of Supervisors may approve a variance.

Acceptable Waste

The North Landfill and South Transfer Station accept most waste that can be described as Commercial, Construction, or Household wastes.

Unacceptable Waste

The North Landfill and South Transfer Station are specifically prohibited from accepting hazardous waste. As a general guide, the following items or materials are prohibited:

hazardous waste including asbestos material and regulated medical waste
animal carcasses
liquids
vehicles, farm equipment, construction equipment, etc.
closed drums
slaughterhouse waste
unapproved seafood by-product waste
unapproved industrial process waste
unapproved sewage sludge
pressurized containers with valves intact (eg., propane tanks)

Fees and Establishing a Credit Account

The fee for disposing of waste at the landfill (Tipping Fee) is established by the Accomack County Board of Supervisors, and may be adjusted from time to time. The fee covers the cost to operate the landfills and pay for their closure when they are full.

Payment is made at the time of delivery to the landfill.

Effective July 1, 2019, the standard tipping fee will be $80.00. The following alternate fee has been established for tires.

Off Road Vehicles	$20.43 per tire

*An additional $2.00 per tire is charged for tires that are still on the rim.

How to Establish a Credit Account

Individuals and businesses anticipating the frequent disposal and/or large quantities of waste at the North Landfill and South Transfer Station may wish to establish a credit account.

To do so, the Landfill Credit Application Form must be completed.

The completed form, along with the application fee and security deposit are submitted to the Department of Public Works office at 24401 Joynes Neck Rd in Accomac, Virginia.
