Paid time off is a benefit that is given to full-time employees.  As a full-time employee, you begin to accrue annual leave and sick leave on your first day of employment.  Every pay period your accrued time is added to your available balance.  You will find below, frequently asked questions and information regarding the leave benefit for Accomack County full-time employees.

Q.  How do I request time off?

A.  If an employee needs to request time off, the employee needs to coordinate the request with their supervisor.  If the employee uses Kronos for time management, the request needs to be done through Kronos as well.

Q.  Can sick leave be used in place of vacation time?

A.  No.  An employee's accrued sick leave can only be used for medical purposes or to take care of a family member.  Sick leave can be used for medical or dental appointments, to care for yourself or a family member during an illness.  An employee can reference policy 502 in the County Personnel Manual.

Q.  Can my annual leave be used for medical purposes?

A.  Yes.  If the employee is out of sick leave, annual leave can be used for medical purposes provided the employee has enough accrued time to do so.

 Q.  Is there any other type of leave that can be used as paid leave?

A.  Yes.  Accomack County full-time employees can opt into the Sick Leave Bank during on-boarding or open enrollment.  Should an employee decide to participate, they would donate 8 hours of their own sick leave to the bank.  If an employee, who is a member of the sick leave bank, is out of work for a long period of time and has exhausted all of their sick and annual leave, they can submit a request to use the sick leave bank.  Upon approval, the employee may be given up to an additional 45 days of paid leave leave within a 12 month period.  This is given in increments and not all at once.

Please review policy 503,  for further information.

Q.  As a full-time employee, how much annual leave do I accrue?

A.  As per policy 501 of the County Personnel Manual, employees accrue annual leave based on the years of employment with Accomack County and based on whether you are a 40 hour per week employee or 212 hour monthly employee.  Please see the charts below as they appear in the policy.
